Placement Case Studies

Sumait University

In 2022, Yussaf Hamad (SOAS) took part in a teaching placement at Sumait University as a lecturer in linguistics.

Deptford is Changing

Anita Strasser’s 2019-2020 placement project combined academia, art and activism to create a book detailing the changing faces of Deptford.

Sexsplain

In 2019, Natasha Richards (University of Essex) undertook a placement with Sexplain, a company that provides comprehensive and inclusive sex education to young people.

Muscaliet Press

In 2017, Simon Everett (University of Essex) established the small, independent creative writing publishing press, Muscaliet, as part of his six-month CHASE placement. Muscaliet Press’s editorial vision is to promote hybridity in written genres and forms.

The Bridge Plus+

In 2019, Elizabeth Morgan (University of East Anglia) took part in a twelve-month placement at The Bridge Plus+ a ‘Norfolk based black/Asian and minority ethnic (BME) organisation aimed at improving community cohesion through innovative community engagement activities and service delivery to promote race equality and community cohesion’.

British Archive of Contemporary Writing

From 2018-2020, doctoral researcher Emily Walker (University of East Anglia) acted as Curatorial Assistant of the Charlie Higson Archive, a collection of television comedy materials at the British Archive of Contemporary Writing. Within this role, she curated The Fast Show 25th Anniversary Exhibition 2019-2020.

You’re Dead to Me

In 2020, Olivia Croyle (University of East Anglia) undertook a CHASE funded placement with Muddy Knees Media as a researcher for the BBC 4 podcast, ‘You’re Dead to Me’. The podcast aims to make a wide variety of historical subjects accessible to a broad audience by injecting high quality research with funny commentary by comedians.

CDA Case Studies

Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs) are doctoral studentship projects which are developed by a university-based academic working in collaboration with an organisation outside of higher education. UEA and The BBC Archive

Sandy Balfour is currently undertaking a Collaborative Doctoral Award co-designed by the University of East Anglia and the BBC Archive. His doctoral research is concerned with poetry on BBC television, 1936-2009.

University of Essex & John Lewis Partnership Heritage Centre

This project examines democracy within the John Lewis Partnership and how it has changed throughout the 50 year period, using documents from the business archive and oral histories from retired Partners who would have been involved in the democratic structure.

UEA & The British Museum

Eleanor Stinson is currently undertaking a Collaborative Doctoral Award co-designed by the University of East Anglia and the British Museum. Her doctoral research is concerned with the continental influence on English coinage and Royal administration in the 12th century.
