Placements: A ‘How To’ Guide for Organisations

About CHASE research placements

PhD researchers at CHASE member institutions can undertake a fully funded placement during their studies. The main criteria are:

  • They must be doing a PhD in an arts and humanities subject area.

  • The placement must represent suitable training and development for them.

  • The employer does not offer remuneration.

  • The placement is between 1 and 6 months full time equivalent (can be part time or full time).

  • Researchers should be past their first year of the PhD, although exceptions can be made.

PhD researchers can benefit from experience, a stipend, expenses support and a partial tuition fee waiver.

What we will need from your organisation

  • A named Placement Supervisor to be the researcher’s main point of contact.

  • A signed agreement form issued by the researcher’s institution.

  • A short testimonial from the Placement Supervisor or another relevant staff member.

Advertising a placement with us

We maintain a list of currently available placement opportunities on our website. You can add yours by completing the short form below. We will let you know as soon as your placement is on the list and we will notify our researchers of the new opportunity.

If a CHASE PhD researcher approaches you

We encourage researchers to contact organisations they are interested in working with. Proactively approaching organisations is part of the skills development training the scheme is designed to provide. You are not obligated to respond, although if you would like to offer an opportunity, you will simply need to ensure that it meets our criteria. You do not need to fill out our online form – the researcher will be responsible for gathering all necessary information and passing it to us.

Offering a placement

This applies whether you advertise with us or are approached by a researcher:

  • Agree on the terms of the placement with the researcher (start date, work pattern, end date, job description, work location(s), Placement Supervisor).

  • The researcher will apply to CHASE to support the placement. Once approved, the institution will contact your organisation with the agreement form.

  • The researcher will send us an initial confirmation in the first 2 weeks of the placement. This is an opportunity to note any changes and request further advice or support.

  • You and your researcher are welcome to contact CHASE at any point to ask questions or raise concerns.

  • Once the placement has concluded, you will be asked to provide a short testimonial.
