Muscaliet Press

In 2017, Dr Simon Everett (University of Essex) established the small, independent creative writing publishing press, Muscaliet, as part of his six-month CHASE placement. Muscaliet Press’s editorial vision is to promote hybridity in written genres and forms.

Muscaliet Press now has over nine publications under its belt, ranging from a translation of the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé to an opera libretto based on the myth of the Sacred Band of Thebes.

Simon comments: “I had always wanted to try and start a publishing press, having some pre-existing experience of how to design and typeset documents from before my PhD. CHASE enabled me to have access to the resources in order to put those plans in motion as a self-employed placement.

Publishing creative writing - my subject area - not only enabled me to give something back to the discipline in a way beyond the scope of my PhD, it also enabled me to sharpen my own editorial skills when looking at the creative and critical writing of others; this was key for the final stretch of editing my own thesis and, I would say, invaluable to my own writing. The rush that I had holding the printed and bound proof copy my press's first publication is something I’ll never forget - and for each new publication that joy is still there.”
